Active Transportation Committee Meeting Updates

NOTICE: The regular meetings of the Active Transportation Committee are suspended until June 30, 2027. Resolution 25-194, enacted by the City Council on August 26, 2025, established four Helene Recovery Boards and instituted a temporary operational framework for thirteen advisory boards and commissions, including the Multimodal Transportation Commission (MMTC), the governing body of the Active Transportation Committee. Until June 30, 2027, related tasks will be assigned to the Multimodal Transportation Commission and the Transportation Department.  

General Information

The purpose of the City of Asheville’s Active Transportation Committee is to advise the Multimodal Transportation Commission and City staff on greenways, bike and micro-mobility facilities, and sidewalks within Asheville while educating and engaging the public and advocating for funding.

The Active Transportation Committee consists of at least seven members and up to eleven members. All are appointed by the Multimodal Transportation Commission. The term of office is three years.

The Active Transportation Committee may advise the Multimodal Transportation Commission on active transportation projects and issues, including but not limited to: 

  • Implementing the City’s adopted GAP Plans (Greenways, ADA Transition, and Pedestrian Plans)
  • Projects, policies, and programs that advance the City’s multimodal transportation network
  • Organizing active transportation-based, volunteer-led data collection and reporting projects (i.e., annual bicycle/pedestrian counts and greenway intercept surveys)
  • City-led studies and/or plans with active transportation components
  • Appointment of Committee members to serve on Steering Committees or Task Forces for active transportation-related projects identified by City staff.
  • Providing a forum for continued resident input in the planning and programming of future pedestrian, bicycle, and micro-mobility facilities.
  • Presenting reports and recommendations to the Multimodal Transportation Commission as needed.

Membership

The Committee is comprised of no fewer than 7 and no more than 11 members. Members are appointed by the Multimodal Transportation Commission. Members of the Committee are appointed for two consecutive three-year terms, or until the member’s successor is duly appointed. 

Current members:  Claudia Nix (Chair), Ritchie Rozzelle (Vice Chair), Kristen Erhard, Mimi Gordon, Leanna Joyner, Micah McLain, Priya Ray, Tyler Roach, and Dennis Wencel. There are two open positions on the committee.

The Committee is not accepting applications while suspended until June 30, 2027.

Public Access: 

Public Comment:

  • In-person Comments: Meetings are always open to the public and a public comment period is available during the meetings.
  • Time Limit: Any person addressing the Committee shall be limited to a three-minute presentation. Any group of three (3) or more individuals, not including the speaker, making a presentation to the Committee may have a single spokesperson who will be allowed ten (10) minutes to address the Committee. The Committee will receive written information from any individuals or groups that cannot conclude their presentations within these time limitations.
  • Requests to be on Agenda: Any individual or group who wishes to address the Committee may make a written request to the Staff Liaison to be on the agenda at least two (2) working days before the meeting. The Chair and the Staff Liaison will determine, based upon the completeness of the request and any other necessary business of the Committee, whether the matter will be placed on the agenda.
