Planning and Zoning Commission


The Planning and Zoning Commission is an advisory board to City Council that

  • reviews text for proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance
  • hears proposals to zone or change the zoning of property regulated under the Unified Development Ordinance and then makes recommendations to City Council for final action
  • performs studies and surveys of the present conditions and probable future development of the City and its environs
  • formulates and recommends to the City Council the adoption or amendment of a comprehensive plan and other plans
  • reviews the terms of the UDO from time to time, as it deems appropriate
  • review applicants of planned unit development designation and preliminary plans
  • review and decide on approval of all proposed preliminary plats for major subdivision
  • and performs such additional powers and duties as may be set forth elsewhere in the Unified Development Ordinance and in other laws and regulations

The Commission consists of seven members, five City residents appointed by City Council and two residents of the extra-territorial area of the City and appointed by Buncombe County Commissioners. The length of term of office is three years.

 


Regularly Scheduled Meetings

Notice: The next Planning and Zoning Commission meeting will be held at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center on July 1, 2020.

In-person:

Harrah’s Cherokee Center, Banquet Hall – 87 Haywood Street, Asheville, NC 28801

This meeting will be conducted in-person with appropriate measures in place to ensure public safety. Any individuals wishing to attend must adhere to the following COVID-19 safety protocols:

  • Wear an appropriate cloth face covering when in the building (covering may be removed when speaking/presenting)
  • Consent to a temperature check at entrance – individuals with a temperature reading of 99.5 degrees or higher will be denied entry
  • Maintain 6 feet of physical distance between other individuals at all times
  • Follow the taped circulation paths
  • Where appropriate, wash hands and/or use hand sanitizer provided
  • Do not exceed posted capacities of meeting room, elevators or bathrooms – in the event that meeting room capacity is exceeded, attendees will be directed to a designated overflow area

 

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the first floor conference room of City Hall.
