Recreation Last updated or reviewed on July 21, 2023 Asheville Parks & Recreation is dedicated to providing quality leisure experiences for the community through a variety of recreational programs, services, parks, and specialized facilities. By providing a wide range of opportunities for folks of all ages, interests, and abilities to come together in pursuit of positive leisure outlets, recreation creates connections between people and their communities, and enhances the overall quality of life for Asheville residents and visitors. Recreation Programs – Current programs Offering a wide variety of programs for all ages throughout the community. From dance classes to wood working, our programs aim to provide a positive experience and enhance the quality of life for all participants. Athletics – Current programs Designed to provide wholesome recreational opportunities for community residents of all skill levels and ages. Emphasis is placed on fair play and sportsmanship and a variety of team and individual sports programs, leagues and events for youth and adults are offered. Outdoor Recreation – Current programs Exciting outdoor adventures and environmental education opportunities for all ages and abilities. You will find all you need to make your outdoor adventure plans for the upcoming season. Activities include summer adventure camps, hiking, mountain biking, rafting, skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, youth programs, adult programs, overnight trips and special events. Therapeutic Recreation – Current programs Offering therapeutic recreation and educational programs to people of all ages requiring specialized services due to developmental and/or physical disabilities, enabling them to develop new recreational skills and maintain existing ones to enhance health, independence and well-being. Our goal is to help promote a high quality of life for individuals with disabilities within the community by providing a variety of specialized recreational services. All activities and programs are available for individuals who meet the following eligibility requirements: Must be able to work in a group setting Ability to follow program rules, converse with others in a respectful manner and respect personal space of others Maintain personal care needs independently (including administering medication, toileting and eating) Ability to utilize basic communication skills (making needs/wants known) Demonstrate basic social skills (interact with peers) Must not have a history of violence against themselves or others The LRT/CTRS are unable to provide one-on-one supervision, however we will try to meet each participant’s needs. If an individual does not meet the eligibility requirements, they can still participate if they have their own support staff.
