Meeting Updates:

The Human Relations Commission of Asheville will meet as-needed until June 30, 2027, unless noticed otherwise. Special meetings may occur if the board needs to meet regarding Helene-related or pressing matters. Members of boards that are meeting on an as-needed basis have several pathways to propose new tasks that have not been directed by City Council. General Information

The Human Relations Commission of Asheville (HRCA) members will be eligible to serve two consecutive two-year terms, and their duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Making policy recommendations to the City Council that promote and improve human relations and advance equity in the City
  •  Supporting the City’s Office of Human Relations, Anti-Discrimination, and Compliance
  •  Providing a forum where residents can raise issues and complaints relating to human relations in the City
  •  Engaging the community regarding the utilization of City-funded programs and policies for the promotion of human relations
  •  Promoting and improving human relations and advancing equity in the following areas: public safety; educational, art and cultural opportunities; economic development; health and human services; and housing.

Membership

The Human Relations Commission of Asheville (HRCA) shall be comprised of nine members appointed by the Asheville City Council, for staggered two-year terms. Notwithstanding the foregoing, all members appointed by the Asheville City Council shall serve at the pleasure of Council, and may be removed at any time with or without cause. Priority will be given to appointing members who are residents of the city, with an allowance for up to three members to be non-city residents who currently reside within Buncombe County. Members can be removed at the discretion of the city council for good cause. In appointing members to the HRCA, the council should endeavor to use the following criteria:

  • Members should have demonstrated an interest and experience in human relations;
  • Council shall appoint members who reside in the various geographical areas of the city to include: north Asheville, south Asheville, west Asheville, east Asheville and the downtown area.

The City of Asheville does not consider race, ethnicity, color or national origin in its appointments to the HRCA, nor is membership restricted by any of these characteristics. 

Membership shall be limited to two full successive terms (plus any unexpired term to which a member is appointed).

  • Call-In Public Comments: Leave voicemail comments by calling (855) 925-2801 and entering the meeting code 9723.
  • Written Public Comments: Written public comments can be sent by email to HumanRelationsCommission@PublicInput.com.
  • In-Person Comments: Comments will be limited to 3 minutes for individuals. Any group of three (3) or more individuals, not including the speaker, making a presentation to the Commission may have a single spokesperson who will be allowed ten minutes to address the Commission.
