Meeting Notice

NOTICE: The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee (AHAC) will hold a special meeting on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the First Floor Conference Room of City Hall (70 Court Plaza). The meeting will be in-person with a hybrid option for committee members. The purpose of the meeting is to (1) adopt new rules of procedure, (2) hold officer elections, (3) hear an update on affordable housing activities over the past year, (4) begin work on a Home Repair program policy, and (5) discuss future committee work within the recovery context.

General Information

The Committee will work in conjunction with City leadership and staff to implement the 2008 Affordable Housing Plan. The specific functions will be:

to consider affordable housing policy issues and advise City leadership about those policies;
to develop concrete action steps to implement the highest priorities of the Affordable Housing Plan, and to update that Plan as appropriate over time;
to advise City leadership and staff regarding affordable housing priorities for the investment of City-controlled funds.

Membership

The Affordable Housing Advisory Committee is composed of no more than 13 members who will represent the diverse viewpoints of community stakeholders on affordable housing, such as

A non-profit developer of affordable housing
A for-profit housing developer
An affordable housing advocate
An architect
A real estate agent
A neighborhood association representative
A resident of affordable housing
A representative of the housing authority
A representative of the private philanthropic community
A banker/lender with loan and/or commercial expertise
A senior staff member from the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville (HACA)

Members shall serve three-year staggered terms. Notwithstanding the foregoing, all members shall serve at the pleasure of Council, and may be removed at any time with or without cause.

Regular Meeting Schedule

NOTICE: The regular meetings of the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee will remain meeting as needed until June 30, 2027, unless noticed otherwise. This page will be updated as new information becomes available. Special meetings may occur if a board needs to meet regarding Helene-related or pressing matters.

Members of boards that are meeting on an as-needed basis have the following pathways to propose new tasks that have not been directed by City Council:

Ask their board’s representative on the Helene Recovery Boards to present the idea to their respective Recovery Board.
Communicate the idea to a Council Committee.
Communicate the idea to City Council.
Ask their board chair to present the idea to the department director who provides support to their board (e.g., Urban Forestry Master Plan, Arts & Culture Plan, Home Repair, Resilience Hubs, etc.).
