Urban Forestry Commission

General Information

This Commission serves as an advisory board to the City Council on the facilitation of the planting, growth and protection of trees within the city; the fostering of communication and coordination among the residents of the city that could provide the needed support for protection of trees within the city; and the performance of continued research, planning and feasibility assessments required to support these activities. They also work with City staff to promote and enforce chapter 20 of this Code regarding the regulation of planting, protection, preservation and removal of trees: for example they may make recommendations to Asheville’s Planning Director and Urban Forester on (development permit) requests for alternative compliance with the City’s landscaping standards.

Members of boards that are meeting on an as-needed basis have the following pathways to propose new tasks that have not been directed by City Council:

  • Ask their board’s representative on the Helene Recovery Boards to present the idea to their respective Recovery Board.

  • Communicate the idea to a Council Committee.

  • Communicate the idea to City Council.

  • Ask their board chair to present the idea to the department director who provides support to their board (e.g., Urban Forestry Master Plan, Arts & Culture Plan, Home Repair, Resilience Hubs, etc.).
