Human Relations Commission of Asheville Last updated or reviewed on December 2, 2025 NOTICE: The regular meetings of the Human Relations Commission will remain meeting as needed until June 30, 2027, unless noticed otherwise. This page will be updated as new information becomes available. Special meetings may occur if a board needs to meet regarding Helene-related or pressing matters. Members of boards that are meeting on an as-needed basis have the following pathways to propose new tasks that have not been directed by City Council: Ask their board’s representative on the Helene Recovery Boards to present the idea to their respective Recovery Board. Communicate the idea to a Council Committee. Communicate the idea to City Council. Ask their board chair to present the idea to the department director who provides support to their board (e.g., Urban Forestry Master Plan, Arts & Culture Plan, Home Repair, Resilience Hubs, etc.). The Human Relations Commission of Asheville (HRCA) members will be eligible to serve two consecutive two-year terms, and their duties include, but are not limited to: Making policy recommendations to the City Council that promote and improve human relations and advance equity in the City Supporting the City’s Office of Equity and Inclusion Providing a forum where residents can raise issues and complaints relating to human relations in the City Engaging the community regarding the utilization of City-funded programs and policies for the promotion of human relations Promoting and improving human relations and advancing equity in the following areas: public safety; educational, art and cultural opportunities; economic development; health and human services; and housing. Human Relations Commission Enabling Ordinance Human Relations Commission Enabling NC General Statute Regular Meeting Schedule The Human Relations Commission of Asheville meets in person on the third Thursday of every other month (in Jan., Mar., May, Jul., Sep., Nov.) from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room in City Hall, unless otherwise posted. Members The Human Relations Commission of Asheville (HRCA) will be composed of no more than nine members appointed by City Council. City Council will endeavor to appoint city residents (with up to three members residing within Buncombe County) and applicants with demonstrated interest and experience in human relations, who reside in the various geographical areas of the city to include: north Asheville, south Asheville, west Asheville, east Asheville and the downtown area. The City of Asheville does not consider race, ethnicity, color or national origin in its appointments to the HRCA, nor is membership restricted by any of these characteristics. Members will serve staggered two-year terms. Notwithstanding the foregoing, all members appointed by the Asheville City Council shall serve at the pleasure of Council, and may be removed at any time with or without cause.
