Property & Evidence

The effective investigation and prosecution of criminal offenders relies heavily on the careful, methodical and proper use of evidence. The Asheville Police Department’s Property & Evidence Section maintains the integrity of each item of evidence. Careful safeguards ensure all property coming into the department’s possession is processed in accordance with state laws, city ordinances and departmental policies and procedures.  Each year, more than 10,000 items are turned into this section ranging from lost and recovered property to evidence in criminal cases.

Property Retrieval

All found property is held for 180 days.  If the property is not claimed within 14 days after the expiration date, the claim is relinquished.  Contact a representative of the Property & Evidence Section for more information and assistance if you have lost an item.

Prescription Medication Drop-Off

A medication drop-off box is located in the front lobby of the police department and may be accessed during regular business hours.  Items may also be submitted directly to the Property & Evidence Section.  We ask that all medication be removed from their original containers and place into a sealed bag.
