Department Programs and Academies

We offer several interactive programs to help residents learn more about law enforcement and get involved with the APD.

Citizens Police Academy

This course offers a firsthand look at police operations through classroom instruction, presentations, and live demonstrations.

  • Topics Covered: Criminal investigations, constitutional and criminal law, departmental structure, use of force, and defensive tactics.
  • Hands-on Experience: Participants may ride along with an officer and participate in simulated weapons training.
  • Enrollment: Those wishing to participate must apply and be accepted.
  • Current Status: Stay tuned for Fall 2026 academy dates.

Junior Police Academy (JPA)

A challenging summer program for local youth to explore careers in public safety and build leadership skills. Dates for the 2027 academy have not yet been finalized.  Please check this page in the Spring of 2027 for updated announcements. 

  • Eligibility: High school students (ages 14 to 18) interested in law enforcement.
  • What to Expect: Learn about police work and practice basic skills. Be ready to work hard—it will be a challenge for both your body and mind.

Immersion Academy

A one-week, pre-academy “exposure” curriculum designed to give participants a professional look at modern law enforcement. Dates for the 2027 academy have not yet been finalized.  Please check this page in the Spring of 2027 for updated announcements. 

  • Eligibility: College-aged individuals (ages 18–22), including Criminal Justice majors and recent high school graduates.
  • What to Expect: A realistic look at police work and an exploration of career opportunities within the Asheville Police Department.
