The Outdoor Recreation Program offers exciting outdoor adventure and environmental education opportunities for all ages and abilities. You will find all you need to make your outdoor adventure plans for the upcoming season. Activities include summer adventure camps, hiking, mountain biking, rafting, skiing, snowboarding, backpacking, youth programs, adult programs, overnight trips and special events.

OUTDOOR PROGRAMS - WINTER/SPRING, 2017

Youth Programs/School Day Out Adventures

School may be closed but there is no need to sit inside. Come join us for a fun day of outdoor adventure. Participants should bring lunch, water and a snack and wear activity appropriate clothing and footwear.

* All schools outdoor trips have a minimum of 6 participants and a maximum of 12

Nature Play Day
March 10, 9am-5pm
Ages 7-10

A day focused on animal habitats and exploration!  Spend the day exploring the wild world of animals through fun games and activities, then take a trip to the WNC Nature Center to see the animals up close.  Drop off and pick up at the Murphy-Oakley Center (749 Fairview Road). Fee: $25, City of Asheville residents receive a $5 discount.

Biking on the Swamp Rabbit Trail
March 31, 9am-5pm
Ages 11-14

We’ll head south near Greenville, SC and catch the Swamp Rabbit Greenway. We’ll bike about 6 miles along the beautiful trail to Falls Park and then return on the same path (12 miles total ride). Riders may bring their own bike/helmet in good condition. Drop off and pick up at the Murphy-Oakley Center (749 Fairview Road). Fee: $25, City of Asheville residents receive a $5 discount. **Bike Rentals are available for a $30 fee but must be reserved in advance.

Spring Break Adventure
April 10-13 (Monday-Thursday), 9am-5pm
Ages 8-12

Join our outdoor adventure crew for a fun-filled spring break week outdoors as we spend 4 days adventuring in Asheville and Western North Carolina. Activities are weather dependent but may include hiking, mountain biking, geocaching, disc golf, archery, indoor swimming, games, and other fun adventures. Campers should bring lunch and water each day. Fee: $160. City of Asheville residents receive a $10 discount.

Adult Programs

Senior Treks
February 28, March 22, April 25 & May 18
For adults 50+

A low-impact hiking program offering leisurely-paced hikes for adults.  Bring lunch, water, good hiking shoes and proper clothing.  You need to be in good physical condition to participate.  Due to the forest fires late last fall, some of the hike locations are still TBD. Please check approximately one week prior to the hike for the final location.  Each hike is a day trip and pre-registration is required.  Fee: $5 per trip and includes transportation.

Canoe Skills - Lake Julian
April 26, 5:30-7:30pm ~ or ~

May 16, 5:30-7:30pm

Interested in trying canoeing for the first time or want to brush up on your skills before summer?  Join us for an early evening paddle at Lake Julian.  This program is designed for beginner paddlers.  Canoe, PFD, and paddle are provided.  Program meets at the Lake Julian Boat Launch Area.  Pre-registration is required.  Fee: $18. City of Asheville residents receive a $5 discount.

 

Family Programs

Caving & Bat Ecology - With the WNC Nature Center
February 18, 9am-5pm
For adults and kids ages 8+.

Spend a day caving in East Tennessee as we learn about bats and cave ecology.  We'll load into our van and head west to learn and explore the world underground.  Helmets and headlamps will be provided.  Participants will be sent a recommended clothing list and should pack lunch and water.  Participants should be in good physical condition for this program and all youth under 18 must register with an adult. We'll meet at the WNC Nature Center Classroom. Fee: $35. City of Asheville residents receive a $5 discount.

Asheville Outdoor Family - Camping 101
Meet & Greet:  April 30, 3:30-5pm
Overnight Trip:  May 6-7
For adults and kids 5+.

Interested in camping with your family but aren't sure where to start?  Join us for a fun-filled camping trip everyone will enjoy. Fees include campsite with nearby restrooms and use of select camping equipment.  Participants should bring their own bedding, personal items, and food.  Fun camping recipes and activities during the campout are included!.   Youth under 18 must register with an adult.  Minimum of 10 and a maximum of 25 participants.  Fee: $12.50 per person.

Canoeing Adventure - With the WNC Nature Center
May 13, 9am-6pm
For adults and kids ages 4+.

Join us for a day on the lake canoeing and exploring the flora and fauna of the watershed. Transportation to the lake and canoe gear will be provided.  Be sure to bring water and a lunch.  Participants should be in good physical condition and all youth under 18 must register with an adult. Our meeting place will be at the WNC Nature Center Classroom. Fee: $30, City of Asheville residents receive a $5 discount.

Canoe Skills
May 20, 10:30am-12:30pm ~ or ~ 2-4pm
Ages 10+
