City of Asheville offices closed January 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Asheville City government offices will be closed Monday, January 19, 2026 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Here is a look at City services affected by this holiday.

Trash and recycling

Sanitation collection services will run on schedule, but the office will be closed. Residential trash and recycling will be collected as normal, Monday-Thursday, the week of January 19.  Any changes in collection due to weather will be announced via AVL Collects alerts and City media channels. Sign up for sanitation collection alerts and schedule changes with the AVL Collects app or at ashevillenc.gov/AVLcollects. 

ART bus service

ART bus service routes and facilities will operate on a ART holiday schedule, which is the same as the Sunday schedule. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is one of six days ART runs on a reduced holiday schedule. For more route information or service alerts, visit RidetheART.com.

Asheville Parks & Recreation

Most parks and greenways are open on a regular schedule of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., except:

  • All areas of French Broad River Park and Recreation Park are closed
  • John B. Lewis Soccer Complex is open, but all other areas of Azalea Park are closed
  • Carrier Park’s ballfield, playground, skate rink, and courts are closed, but the picnic shelter, parking lot, wetland areas, velodrome, and the portion of French Broad River Greenway that runs through the park are open
  • The portion of the French Broad River Greenway that runs through French Broad River Park is closed. Some areas of Richmond Hill Park are closed and marked with signs

All community centers and administrative offices are closed. Outdoor park features such as playgrounds, picnic areas, and sports courts adjacent to community center buildings are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Riverside Cemetery offices are closed, but grounds are open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some areas are inaccessible due to Helene-related damage.

Burton Street Community Center co-hosts a day of service with Burton Street Community Association, Hood Huggers International, and Riverlink from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Community & Regional Entertainment Facilities

Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville will be closed Monday, January 19. The iHeart Media Asheville Box Office will reopen for normal business hours, Tuesday-Friday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and 1 hour prior to ticketed events. WNC Nature Center will be open for regular hours. For more information, please visit www.wildwnc.org 

Asheville Municipal Golf Course and Asheville Muni Disc Golf will be open during regular hours for play.  Tee times can be booked at www.ashevillegc.com. 

Water Resources

Water Resources offices will be closed January 19. Staff will be on 24-hour availability for water-related emergencies over the holiday.  Customers can call the customer service line at (828) 251-1122 to report water-related emergencies, leaks, breaks, or service interruptions. Water Resources 24/7 staffing of our water treatment facilities continues throughout the holiday.

Emergency Response Staff

All public safety services, including police, fire, and emergency response, will operate according to the normal schedule — 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
