Service Improvements

This page is dedicated to past and upcoming service improvements for the Asheville Rides Transit (ART) bus system.

Upcoming Changes

Starting October 31, eight ART routes will have minor schedule changes focused on improving on-time performance. These schedule changes are aimed to improve reliability for riders by continuing to reduce early and late trips.

The table below shows which routes will have changes to the schedule, with links to the updated schedule included. New maps are being printed and will be available at the ART Transit Station, 49 Coxe Ave., prior to the changes on Oct. 31. Links to the maps on the Transit Maps & Schedules webpage are shown below.

Hours of operations and fares ($1) will remain the same.

With the rollout of these improvements, City and ART employees will be at the ART Transit Station downtown to answer questions and help guide riders. If you have a smartphone, you can also download the Transit App, which offers real-time bus route and arrival information.

Recent Service Changes to the WE2

Asheville Rides Transit (ART) made changes to the WE2 route schedule and its service to the Social Security Administration at Centre Park Drive. Beginning September 19th, 2021, the WE2 no longer services the Social Security bus stops after 4:30 pm outbound, 5:00 pm inbound, and on weekends. This applies to the following stops: Stop ID #256 Centre Park Drive at Social Security Administration, Stop ID #670 Centre Park Drive at Exit, Stop ID #671 Piney Mountain Drive at Chunns Cove Road, and Stop ID #669 Piney Mountain Drive at Chunns Cove Road.

Additionally, changes to the timetable were made. Furthermore, the times for stops after Tunnel Rd at Ingles (going Outbound from the ART Station), and for stops after Tunnel Rd at Chunns Cove (going Inbound to the ART Station) will be on an alternate schedule after 5:00 pm and on weekends. Full schedule linked here.

Staff proposes making these changes in order to address issues with the WE2 continually running late after 5:00 pm and to improve reliability for riders. The Social Security Administration, along with the majority of businesses on Centre Park Drive, does not serve the public after 4:00 pm on weekdays, or on weekends.

City Transit staff accepted public comments on the proposed changes until Friday, September 17, 2021. Any questions or comments about these changes can be directed to hburton@ashevillenc.gov.

Future Improvements

More improvements are in store for ART in the future. Improvements will include extended service hours and increased frequency for the S3 & S6. Staff is unable to implement these changes at this time due to nationwide bus driver shortages. While funding for these improvements is secured, ART does not currently have the number of bus drivers needed for implementation. ART is continuing to recruit drivers at this time so these changes can be feasible in the future.
