What’s Up AVL!

The City of Asheville’s bi-monthly radio show allows the community to take a deep dive with the City of Asheville staff and departments.

You can learn about different departments and what projects are taking place in your community.

This Week’s Guest: Director of Parks and Recreation D. Tyrell McGirt  (click link for Youtube replay of show)

Host Sam PArada and guest D. Tyrtell McGirt in the WRE$S studio during live taping

Sam and Mr. McGirt talk about the city’s comprehensive plan for public leisure spaces and recreation programs.  The team is asking for public input at events around the city and through a community survey that can be taken from the comfort of home. Titled Recreate Asheville: Shaping Our City’s Parks, the plan will help guide the department’s decisions for the next 10-15 years to connect, fix, build, and preserve recreation programs and parkland.

Community members are encouraged to share innovative ideas at Recreate Asheville workshops and online at RecreateAsheville.com . Community egagement kicked off in late September and runs through November 20.
Parks and Recreation staff are also attending farmers markets, festivals, and APR events like  Social Skate Night to gather feedback.

Asheville residents can also share ideas at our 2 remaining  drop-in events.
  • October 9, 2-6 p.m., at Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center on 121 Shiloh Road

  • October 12, 5-7 p.m., at Carrier Park on 220 Amboy Road (Spanish language interpretation and translation services available at this workshop.)

Community members who cannot attend one of these workshops are welcome to share input through the citywide survey on RecreateAsheville.com, by email to info@RecreateAsheville.com, or at any APR community center or recreation program.
