Whether it’s a small roadside stand or a big market in the city, a visit to a farmers market is a great way to get delicious and nutritious food while supporting local businesses. Access to healthy, nutritious food and the ability to cultivate, harvest, process, sell, share, and trade food are priorities for the City, as outlined in its Food Policy Action Plan. In addition to the great food, these markets can also serve as community connection points, bringing neighbors and friends together.
Many markets accept SNAP/EBT, and some offer additional incentives, like Double SNAP for Fruits and Vegetables from the the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP). SNAP customers who swipe their EBT card for any amount, will receive that amount in tokens, and up to $20 in additional Farm Fresh Bucks, which can be used to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
