The City of Asheville has announced the temporary closure of the municipal pool at Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center to ensure the immediate safety of all visitors and staff. This difficult decision was made after multiple incidents created significant safety concerns at the facility, including a recent incident involving a firearm. All scheduled programs are cancelled during the closure including water aerobics and teen pool parties. Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) is working diligently to institute a security plan and reopen the pool as soon as possible.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision, and it was not taken without thoughtful deliberation of the pros and cons for the Asheville community,” said APR Director D. Tyrell McGirt. “However, the safety and well-being of our residents and staff is our paramount concern. Ensuring a safe environment for everyone is currently impossible until we can enhance security during operating hours.”
Our goal is to reopen this pool as soon as possible. Meanwhile, residents seeking aquatic recreation options are encouraged to utilize the five public pools operated by Buncombe County Parks & Recreation, as well as Splasheville in Pack Square Park. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
