In the latest briefing to the Environment and Safety Committee on January 23, interim Police Chief Mike Lamb shares the good news that first quarter comparisons show a decrease in crime for Asheville.

The Downtown Safety Initiative to develop a sustainable approach to addressing community safety and cleanliness issues transitioned from a pilot initiative to an ongoing effort in July 2023.

Our ongoing efforts to continue and enhance services that support a safe, clean and welcoming downtown include the work being done by our Asheville Police Department (APD) members.

By the Numbers:

Interim Chief Lamb shared positive results of the implementation of data-driven strategies has been instrumental in achieving significant reductions in both violent and property crime citywide, with positive impacts observed in specific districts

● Violent Crime has decreased by 18% compared to the previous year.

● Property Crime has decreased 13% compared to the prior year.
