Asheville streets drying out, Public Works monitoring for potential icy spots

The snow that blew through Asheville this morning left wind in its wake, and that is drying out streets quickly.

“We have been all around the city all morning and have found very few to no issues,” said City Streets Manager Chad Bandy. “We will continue to have trucks ready to address spots as they are reported.”

Temperatures are still forecast to go down into the mid-teens tonight.

Because of the frigid forecast, the Asheville Homeless Coalition has called a Code Purple for Tuesday and Wednesday. Find resources for people who need shelter at this link.

Also with those frigid temperatures there is the possibility that the Water Department may see some lines burst. If you experience an interruption in water, please call Customer Service at 828-251-1122.

Report from Tuesday morning:

As rain and wind  moved into snow and ice this morning, Asheville Public Works staff continue to monitor street conditions.

ART bus service temporarily suspended service at 10 a.m., then resumed it at 10:30 this morning. Find weather-related ART bus route delays on the Transit Service Alerts webpage, as well as on the City of Asheville Facebook page and Twitter feed.

In a Winter Weather Advisory updated this morning,  the National Weather Service forecast the following:

“Arctic air will surge into the area this morning. This will allow rain to briefly transition to light snow over the mountains from around daybreak through the morning. A brief period of sleet or even freezing rain is possible across the valleys before the transition to snow. Snow accumulation from a dusting to less than an inch is expected across most valley locations, while up to 4 inches are possible across the high elevations.”

“Both the streets and the weather are as we expected this morning — wet, windy and getting colder by the hour,” said Public Works Director Greg Shuler.

“Black ice is a concern throughout the day,” Shuler said. “Once the frozen precipitation begins to subside we will focus on trouble spots, school zones, ART bus and sanitation routes.”

So far, Asheville Sanitation trucks are on track for today’s pickup routes.

On Monday, Asheville Public Works loaded salt into its spreaders and attached plows to its trucks to be in a state of readiness should we need to treat icy roads.
