Asheville City Council approves amended property tax rate in response to recently adopted North Carolina legislation

Asheville City Council, in line with Buncombe County Commission’s action to use the property values prior to the 2026 revaluation, voted this evening to amend the City of Asheville property tax rate to address the revenue imbalance created by the North Carolina Senate Bill 889. This adjustment allows the City to maintain a structurally balanced budget with no impact to the services funded in the budget City Council passed on June 9, 2026.

The City of Asheville adjusted tax rate will now be 50.78 cents per $100 of assessed value, as opposed to the original FY27 property tax rate of 37.69 cents. This amended rate, applied to the 2026 values, will generate the same amount of revenue as what was originally adopted for FY27.  Impacts to taxpayers will vary based on their property values.

Residents are encouraged to visit the Buncombe County Tax Department pages for additional information concerning their tax bill.

Please find a copy of the presentation made to the City Council.
