Trees Preserved and Planted Last updated or reviewed on October 7, 2025 At the close of fiscal year 2025, over 2.8 million ft2 of tree canopy had been preserved, while more than 445,000 ft2 of tree canopy had been planted. Over $500,000 was paid in Fee in Lieu, which will be used to enhance the urban canopy. Note: Tropical Storm Helene significantly damaged the existing tree canopy, which is not included in this metric. Tree canopy assessments and interventions will be conducted as part of the Urban Forest Master Plan, which is scheduled to proceed in fiscal year 2026. Desired Trend: Increase in the tree canopy preserved and planted. Methodology: Analysis of data collected by city staff through the permitting process regarding tree canopy planted, preserved, or paid for via Fee in Lieu. Metrics are cumulative with a data collection start date of 2021.
