Staying Safe and Reporting Threats
Understanding Terrorist Alerts
Everyone plays a part in keeping our country safe. It is important to know if there is a higher risk of an attack and what you should do to stay prepared. The National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) shares these updates. In 2011, they stopped using “color codes” and started using bulletins to give the public better information.
How to get the alerts:
- The National Terrorism Advisory System website.
- Sign up for email updates on their site.
- Follow the official Department of Homeland Security on Facebook or X (formerly Twitter).
“See Something, Say Something”
The Asheville Police Department wants you to report anything suspicious. Think about your daily routine: going to school, the store, or work. You know your neighborhood better than anyone else. Because you know what is “normal” for your day, you are the best person to notice when:
- Something is left somewhere it shouldn’t be.
- Someone is acting in a way that doesn’t seem right.
If you see something that feels wrong, say something! You can learn more about this program on the Department of Homeland Security website.
Ways you can take action
- To report a crime or leave a tip, call the police directly at 911 (for emergencies) or (828) 252-1110 (non-emergencies). Learn more about ways to report a crime.
- Use the TIP2APD app or website to share information anonymously. Learn more about TIP2APD.
