The Asheville Police Department’s ride-along program is offered so that people in our community can see what officers do every day and learn why their work is important.

Requirements and How to Apply

You must be at least 18 years old to go on a ride-along and fill out a request packet. The packet includes two main forms: the program agreement and a release of liability. If you don’t finish these forms, you won’t be allowed to participate. By signing these forms, you will give the police department permission to check your criminal history and your driving record.

Complete the ride-along request packet online.

Ride-Along Rules and Guidelines

Safety and weapons

  • You cannot bring any kind of weapon with you. This applies even if you have a legal permit or permission to carry one.
  • The officer or their supervisor can end the ride at any time. They might do this if they feel it is unsafe, become too busy, or must respond to a sensitive call.

What you can and can’t do

  • Your job is just to watch. You are not allowed to help the officer enforce the law or get involved in police work.
  • You cannot take photos, videos, or record audio unless you get written permission first.
  • You will not be allowed to enter sensitive crime scenes.

Scheduling and limits

  • Rides depend on whether an officer is available.
  • You can only do a ride-along once every 12 months unless you get special permission.
  • Rides usually last no more than 5 hours. You cannot stay past midnight or ride longer without special approval.
  • Only one rider is allowed in a police car at a time.
