This information is only for cars towed by the police. If your car was towed from a private parking lot, you must look for the sign on that lot to find out which towing company has your car.
How to find your car
If the Asheville Police Department ordered the tow, you can find your car’s location 24/7:
- Online by going to search.autoreturn.com
- By phone, by calling (888) 217-9731
You will need to have your license plate number or VIN ready.
**If you think your car was stolen, please call the police non-emergency line at (828) 252-1110.**
“On-Hold” vehicles
If the system says your car is “on hold,” it means the police department is keeping it for a specific reason (for example, as evidence). You must get permission from the police department to get it back. Learn more about picking up belongings from the Evidence Unit.
Picking up your vehicle
You must go to the tow lot between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. To get your car, you will need:
- A photo ID, like a driver’s license
- Proof you own the car, such as the title, registration, or bill of sale
- Proof of valid car insurance
You can always get your personal items (like a bag or phone) out of the car, even if you cannot afford to pay the towing fees yet.
Towing costs
The towing company must give you a list showing exactly what they are charging you for. These are the maximum prices they can charge for a standard police tow:
- Standard tow: $165.00
- Storage fee: $30.00 per day
- After-hours pick-up: $50.00
There may be extra costs for things like winching, picking up an overturned vehicle, or using other special equipment like 4-wheel drive trucks or dollies. There are set amounts for most of these extra services, too.
Problems or Complaints
If you have a complaint regarding damage, costs, or service, the best place to start is with the company that towed your vehicle. If you want to report an issue with the police officer or the reason your vehicle was towed – or the tow company doesn’t help with your issue – you can contact the Police Department at (828) 252-1110 or email professionalstandards@ashevillenc.gov.
If you think your car was towed illegally by the police department, you can ask for a probable cause hearing. The person who owns the vehicle must submit a request, in writing, to the Buncombe County Magistrate’s Office. They will set a hearing within 3 days to determine if the officer had probable cause to tow your vehicle.
