How to hire an Off-Duty Officer

Important: Requesting an officer does not guarantee availability. You are responsible for monitoring the status of your request on the RollKall platform.

Special Event Permits

If you are applying for a Special Event Permit through the City of Asheville, do not use the link above. Instead, coordinate directly with the Office of Special Events:

Rules and Regulations

Officers are prohibited from working off-duty in roles that create a conflict of interest. Prohibited jobs include:

  • Civil Collections: Debt collection or towing cars.

  • Private Investigation: Private eye or investigative work.

  • Record Access: Using police databases for private business.

  • Political Activity: Any work suggesting department endorsement of a political idea.

  • Legal Influence: Anything that could influence a court case.

Costs and Pay Rates

  • Minimum Requirement: All requests require a 4-hour minimum.

  • Advance Notice: Requests must be submitted at least 24 hours before the shift begins.

  • Rate Changes: The following rates became effective on March 1, 2026.

Supervisor $93.63 Required for jobs with four or more officers. The supervisor may be counted as one of the four officers.

Holiday Dates

The Holiday Rate applies to: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Cancellation Policy

Fees apply if you cancel a shift after an officer has been assigned:

  1. More than 48 hours notice: You are responsible only for administrative fees for the first 24 hours of the job ($6.75–$10.13 per hour).

  2. Less than 48 hours notice: You must pay the officer’s 4-hour minimum (or hours worked) plus all administrative fees.
