What’s Up AVL!

The City of Asheville’s bi-monthly radio show allows the community to take a deep dive with the City of Asheville staff and departments.

You can learn about different departments and what projects are taking place in your community.

On What’s Up AVL! this week, host Sam Parada interviews Christo Bubenik, marketing and communications manager for the Parks and Recreation Department. They talk about the fun programs underway for Summer 2024 – as well as the department’s ReCreate Asheville Plans

Help unlock the power of our community by building Recreate Asheville: Shaping Our City’s Parks, a road map to guide recreation programs, sports and leisure spaces, and parks for future generations. This is an important opportunity for Ashevillians to create a long-term vision and help inform how projects are prioritized to meet the modern needs of our city – from major improvements to existing parks (beyond just maintenance and repairs) to strategies that use recreation programs to build stronger neighborhoods.

What You Can Do Now:

  • Read the draft plan and give feedback by July 7
  • Learn more about the Recreate Asheville plan and frequently asked questions on the City of Asheville’s website
  • View a presentation to the City of Asheville’s Environment and Safety Committee summarizing the draft plan here or view slides here

What’s Been Done So Far:

  • Gathered community feedback through surveys, workshops, and events
  • Analyzed peer cities, current needs, and future trends
  • Created a draft plan outlining priorities

What Happens Next:

  • Updates to the draft plan will incorporate additional community feedback
  • After review, City Council will vote to adopt a final 10-year strategic action plan to guide investments in parks, community centers, pools, and recreational facilities
  • Voters make a choice during fall elections whether to issue general obligation (GO) bonds to fund strategic projects identified in the Recreate Asheville plan
