Community plans for the 2024 Point-in-Time Count (PIT )are underway.

Volunteers are needed!

How to participate

Sign up to assist in surveying people experiencing homelessness on the evening of Tuesday, January 30, and late morning of Wednesday, January 31.

If you are interested in participating on one or both days of the count, you can sign up here. No prior experience is required and training will be provided.

Volunteer teams will consist of 2 members, pairing an experienced volunteer with a newly engaged volunteer. This is an excellent opportunity to meet someone new, learn from each other, and take action to support the community’s collective response to homelessness.

Schedule Overview (subject to change):

Tuesday, January 30, 2024: Street Teams

  • Launch from Haywood Street
  • Volunteers gather at 3:30 p.m.
  • Count occurs from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Teams of 2 include one person with experience and one person newer to the PIT count or homeless services
  • Teams focus on high-traffic areas and corridors
  • 20 coverage areas

Wednesday, January 31, 2024

  • Launch from Stephens-Lee Community Center
  • 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Street teams cover same geographic areas as night prior
  • Service Locations
    • ABCCM Crisis Ministries (Downtown, North, South, Hominy Valley, 10am-2pm)
    • AHOPE (8 a.m. – 11 a.m.)
    • Haywood Street Congregation (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.)
    • Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry

Background

The United States Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) requires all communities that receive HUD funding to address homelessness to conduct a Point-in-Time Count within the last 10 days each January to identify how many people are experiencing homelessness on a given night.
