Downtown Cleanliness and Safety News: Updates on the Carter-Ann-Patton stormwater improvement project

The Carter-Ann-Patton stormwater project continues to move forward. In a continued effort to keep the community informed, here are the latest updates.

  • Trees were removed between N. Ann St. and Clingman Ave.  These trees will be replaced with species more suited to thrive in an urban setting.
  • Exploratory work at/around the French Broad and Patton intersection has been completed.  Construction in the area can now resume, so we ask the community to continue to use caution as you may encounter large equipment and other construction-related impacts.
  • We love a parade – and to help with the smooth running of the 2023 Holiday Parade this Saturday (Nov. 18), the work zone along Patton Ave. will be removed throughout the parade’s duration.

Improvements being made throughout this project:

  • Reduced area flooding and stormwater system upgrades
  • New ADA-accessible sidewalks on Patton Ave.
  • New high-visibility crosswalks in the project area
  • Street resurfacing with manhole utility cover adjustments
  • Lamp posts in keeping with existing historical style
  • Planting trees on Patton Ave. more suited to thrive in an urban setting
    • Staff, with over 20 years of experience as an Asheville-specific arborist, assessed the project to provide several options for tree varieties as replacement options
    • Staff worked with the Urban Forestry Commission (UFC) for input and review of appropriate tree options
    • Only those that cannot thrive in their current position or those discovered to have disease will be replaced
    • The trees will be replaced in the fall during their optimal planting season.
