The City is seeking volunteers to help with the Transportation Department’s annual bike and pedestrian counts and greenway user surveys, both of which kick off on Sept. 15. Gathering this information helps the City with future planning, grant applications, implementation of the GAP Plan, and better understanding behaviors and trends in Asheville’s multimodal transportation system.
Help is needed for both efforts, and no special skills or prior experience is required. The City greatly appreciates all who volunteer, as this work could not be done without them.
Bike and Pedestrian Count Volunteers
Bike and Pedestrian Count Volunteers will count non-motorized users of our streets at multiple locations on the following dates:
- Tuesday, Sept, 15
- Wednesday, Sept, 16
- Thursday, Sept. 17
- Saturday, Sept. 19 (*a.m. only)
Weekday counts will occur from 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. or 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Saturday counts will occur from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Greenway User Survey Collection Volunteers
Greenway User Surveys capture information about user behavior and the economic impact of these shared-use paths, which are not open to motorized traffic. There will be multiple volunteers at each location for each session. Volunteers will ask greenway users on the Wilma Dykeman or Reed Creek Greenway to answer questions on the following dates and times:
- Tuesday, Sept. 15, 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.*
- Tuesday, Sept. 15, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.*
- Saturday, Sept. 19, 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.
- Saturday, Sept. 19, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
*In the case of rain, surveys will take place on Thursday, Sept. 17, instead of Tuesday.

Staff will try to assign volunteers based on their location preferences but ask for some flexibility. There is no deadline to sign-up, though staff hope to have all sites assigned by early September. After signing up, City staff will reach out within several days with a confirmation email and next steps.
