City of Asheville takes a step towards better pedestrian connectivity with West Patton Avenue Sidewalk project

[Update Aug. 12, 2025: This post has been revised to reflect an update that lane closures will only occur overnight.]

Construction has officially begun on the West Patton Avenue Sidewalk, a project that will install new sidewalk and connect to existing sidewalk along the eastbound lanes of travel resulting in approximately 0.45 miles of accessible sidewalk.

In addition to enhancing safety and accessibility within the City’s sidewalk network, this project improves the overall pedestrian experience with new crosswalks and upgraded bus stop pads to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Stormwater management will also be improved in the project area with the construction of new curb and gutter. The West Patton Avenue Sidewalk project is one of several transportation projects prioritized by City residents during public outreach for the 2016 bond referendum. The voter-approved bond is primarily funding the project, with additional support from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. This section of Patton Avenue is also one of the top-ranked priority corridors for ADA accessibility and pedestrian improvements identified in the City’s GAP Plan

With a five month construction timeline, the project is expected to be complete in late 2025.

What to expect during construction:
  • The contractor is permitted to work on site Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, any lane closures will only occur overnight, roughly 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

  • Temporary lane closures on Patton Avenue will occur in sections between Druid Dr. and Louisiana Ave during overnight work.

  • Access to businesses will be available throughout construction.

  • There will be construction noise during working hours. The contractor will do their best to minimize disruptions and keep noise levels as low as possible.

  • Community members will see construction equipment in the area. Please exercise caution and keep a safe distance from these vehicles.
