Art in the Heart, a temporary public art program and part of the Pack Square Plaza Visioning project, launches this September!
Selected artists have been allotted dates, times, and locations in and around Pack Square Plaza to showcase their art and spark community conversation. Exhibits and/or performances will be on display from 1 day to over 1 month, depending on the type of artwork. Art in the Heart and its pool of local talent will be in and around Pack Square Plaza from September through early 2023. The schedule for November/December and January-March artists will be released subsequently. To learn more about the artists and their projects, please visit ashevillenc.gov/artintheheart.
Members of the public from Buncombe County and beyond are invited to come to Pack Square Plaza, in the heart of downtown Asheville, and experience how these local artists have embraced the theme of social equity and inclusion. Starting on September 9, 2022, public comment on these artworks and the future of Pack Square Plaza will be collected through the City’s engagement hub.

Project Sponsors and Collaborators: Produced/curated by Aaron Snook and the American Myth Center. Mikayla Wilson will be the puppeteer to Leah, with Stephanie Hickling Beckman as the voice of Leah.

About the Project: A puppet show about Leah Erwin, one of twenty seven known enslaved people owned by and living with the Vance family.

Project Sponsors and Collaborators: Youth Artists Empowered, in collaboration with Tepeyac Consulting and with support from the City of Asheville’s Office of Sustainability

About the Project: This project informed and empowered youth artists from impacted communities to share their perspectives of the world around them through digital photography. The installation will include large, weatherproof images collected from the neighborhoods the students visited, along with a 3×5 ft collage. A digital short film created by filmmaker and YAE student Cielo Vera will also be projected for one evening.

Project Sponsors and Collaborators: Sponsors include Dave Steel Company in Asheville and Sailrite Enterprises Inc. in Indiana. UNCA sculpture students will be involved in the construction, installation, and de-installation.

About the Project: Twelve solid colored, nylon flags hanging around a steel, plus-shaped structure will be located in the heart of Pack Square Plaza. The shape and colors represent healing and are meant to represent a heterogeneous society.

About the Project: A roaming performance where three persons in black robes will hold large paper masks with ancient peaceful faces and read poetic words of healing.
