The cold weather of the past weekend has past, but the Asheville area is still in from some potentially impactful weather this evening and overnight.

The National Weather Service is calling for high winds and rains bringing the potential for flooding. As this weather moves our way, we encourage residents to stay safe, alert and engaged.

The City of Asheville will be using City News and our social media platforms: Facebook and X for updates to services and/or emergency information. As always, we encourage residents to sign up for AVL Alerts to get the most recent and accurate information from the City of Asheville during an event.  You can also follow Asheville Fire and Police department social media channels.

Please, sign up for AVL Alerts today and follow: City of Asheville,  Asheville Parks and Recreation, AFD and APD platforms for information on any weather impact to City services or emergency information.

Forecast : High Winds and potential Flooding

(weather can change quickly; please see the National Weather Service for the latest information)

A High Wind Warning is in effect 7 p.m. tonight through 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 9 for elevations above 3500 feet.

A Wind Advisory will be in effect from 7 p.m. tonight through 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 9 for the surrounding area below 3500 feet.

Asheville will be under a Flood Watch from midnight tonight through 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 9

Tuesday, January 9

Excessive rainfall may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas.  The Asheville area is expected to receive 2-3 inches of rainfall with higher amounts south of Asheville in the next 1-2 days.  The bulk of this rainfall is expected to be in 12 hours or less. This storm event will also bring high winds, which may cause down trees and power lines.

Road Closures

Public Works staff will be monitoring river levels as the storm progresses and be ready to barricade flooded roads for the public’s safety. Please do not drive around barricades if a road is closed and do not attempt to drive through a flooded street.
