Community to receive update on Haywood Streetscape project during Sept. 5 meeting

Haywood street scene
Haywood Street in downtown Asheville.

The Haywood Streetscape Improvement project continues to move forward.

This project includes sidewalk rehabilitation, street resurfacing, stormwater improvements, sanitary sewer improvements, and the sourcing, siting and installation of street amenities. An informational meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 5 at the U.S. Cellular Center Banquet Hall (87 Haywood St., second floor) to share the latest updates.

The design plan is available here. This reflects feedback the City of Asheville received from public input sessions. These include moderate concrete sidewalk extensions along Haywood Street to provide additional pedestrian space while still preserving space for on-street parking and loading.

Sewer replacement will also take place in areas outside of Haywood Street, including on College Street, Walnut Street, Flint Street, Page Avenue and potentially Rankin Avenue. Repaving will be completed in all impacted areas.

At the Sept. 5 meeting, City staff will present the draft construction schedule as well as the approach to communications and support moving forward. Representatives from the design/engineering team (McGill Associates) as well as the utilities (Metropolitan Sewerage District and the City’s Water Resources Department) will be in attendance and available for questions. The presentation, discussion points and questions and answers from the meeting will be shared on the project page on the City’s website after the meeting. You can also sign up on that page for regular project updates.

Project construction is scheduled to begin in January 2020.
