This information is only for cars towed by the police. If your car was towed from a private parking lot, you must look for the sign on that lot to find out which towing company has your car.

How to find your car

If the Asheville Police Department ordered the tow, you can find your car’s location 24/7″

You will need to have your license plate number or VIN ready.

Note: if you think your car was stolen, call the police non-emergency line at (828) 252-1110.

“On-Hold” vehicles

If the system says your car is “on hold,” it means the police department is keeping it for a specific reason. You must get permission from the police department to get it back. Call (828) 259-5870 for more information.

Picking up your vehicle

You must go to the tow lot between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. To get your car, you will need:

  • A photo ID, like a driver’s license.
  • Proof you own the car, such as the title, registration, or bill of sale
  • Proof of valid car insurance

You can always get your personal items (like a bag or phone) out of the car, even if you cannot afford to pay the towing fees yet.

Towing costs

The towing company must give you a list showing exactly what they are charging you for. These are the maximum prices they can charge for a standard police tow:

  • Standard tow: $165.00
  • Storage fee: $30.00 per day
  • After-hours pick-up: $50.00

There may be extra costs for things like winching, picking up an overturned vehicle, or using other special equipment like 4-wheel drive trucks or dollies.

Problems or Complaints

For issues with the tow company or damage, please contact Autura. You may file a report online regarding costs or service at https://www.autoreturn.com/contact-feedback/ or https://www.autoreturn.com/submit-claim/ for damage.

To report an issue with the police officer or the reason your vehicle was towed, please contact the Asheville Police Department at (828) 252-1110.

If you think your car was towed illegally, you can ask for a probable cause hearing. The person who owns the vehicle must submit a request, in writing, to the Buncombe County Magistrate’s Office. They will set a hearing within 3 days to determine if the officer had probable cause to tow your vehicle.
