City of Asheville : Ready for any potential weather impacts

Posted on October 8, 2026 by Kim Miller

As our neighbors to the south brace for possible impacts from the first hurricane of the season, we in the mountains know those weather systems can have far-reaching effects. That’s why City of Asheville staff has already started monitoring the weather system and discussing resources as we prepare to serve our community if or when needed. Our Emergency Management team is coordinating with the National Weather Service and Buncombe County Emergency Management to monitor changing weather conditions. All City of Asheville departments that may need to respond to a weather event are already taking proactive steps to ensure personnel and resources are ready should conditions warrant. At this time, there are no impacts to any City of Asheville events, programming, or services. We encourage you to follow our City News site and social media channels for updates.

While the current weather models do not suggest a significant event in our area, we all know weather can be unpredictable.

Taking time to review your family’s preparedness can make a big difference if severe weather impacts our community. We encourage residents to sign up for AVL Alerts. It’s the best way to receive important information in case of an emergency.

Here are a few emergency preparedness tips we welcome you to share with neighbors and friends.

  • Stay informed. Monitor trusted sources, including the National Weather Service and official City of Asheville communications, for the latest weather updates and safety information.
  • Review your emergency preparedness kit. Ensure you have essential supplies, including medications, drinking water, food, flashlights, batteries, and other necessities.
  • Check on your neighbors. Take time to reach out to others who may need additional assistance before or during a storm.
  • Remain vigilant. Weather conditions can change quickly. Stay alert and follow instructions issued by public safety officials.
