The Firefighter Trainee Applicant Hiring Schedule

The Asheville Fire Department’s hiring process is as follows:
Candidate must meet NFPA 1582 standard to be hired.
All new hires will be required to complete AFD’s Fire Academy regardless of prior experience or certifications.
NOW HIRING FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE
Academy Pipelines
- Existing Firefighter/NC EMT or NREMT/ Technical Rescuer certification: 12 week academy
- Existing Firefighter/NC EMT or NREMT: 18 week academy
- Existing NC EMT / or NREMT: 18 week academy
- No Experience or FF Only: 25 week academy
CPAT:
Practice Dates 2023:
– August 14-18
– September 11-15
– October 2-6 (Post application practice)
Official Test Dates 2023:
– October 30th, 31st, November 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Scheduled Written Testing Dates:
– November 6th – 12th
Chief Interviews:
-November 15th – 17th
NFPA Physical:
Week of November 27th
Start date of January 8, 2024.

Basic Employment Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- 18 years or older Valid Drivers License
- Excellent physical condition
- Successful completion of all testing components
- Successful completion of a thorough background check
- Successful completion of drug and alcohol screening

- Upon graduation from the academy annual salary is $46,256.60
