City of Asheville seeks feedback on downtown development review thresholds

In March, the City of Asheville held a public meeting about downtown development issues. City Council is interested in making changes to development rules for the Central Business District. These rules were last written in 2010, after the adoption of the Downtown Master Plan in 2009. The recent surge in downtown development has caused some reconsideration of how projects are reviewed.

At the meeting, three main topics were discussed:

  • Levels of review;
  • The process for Level III projects; and
  • The hotel development process.

Council has indicated that they would like to review more projects in the Central Business District.  Also, City Council and some citizens have expressed concerns about the review process for hotels in downtown.

The City received some feedback at the March meeting, but City Council would like more participation in the discussion to help inform their decision making.

How to participate

We’re asking you, our residents, to weigh in. We’ve launched a topic page on Open City Hall, Asheville’s online public engagement platform, on the downtown development review process.

Please log on to Open City Hall Asheville, read the background information, look at the map and provide your feedback. This topic will be open through July 10. Again we encourage everyone to become a registered user. Registration is quick and easy and it helps City staff know that the feedback we are receiving is verifiable from our residents rather than someone from out of state for example.

Thank you for your valued participation!
