WNC Nature Center staff recount Helene response in their own words

Posted on March 17, 2025March 17, 2025 by Kim Miller
WNC Nature center Director Chris Gentile

As the WNC Nature Center officially reopens to the public, this video recounts, in their own words, how Nature Center staff experienced the response and challenges in the immediate aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene. The resiliency of the staff is matched only by the spirit and resiliency of the Western North Carolina community.

The reopening of our Nature Center is not only a milestone in our recovery, it’s a milestone of hope. The people of Asheville, along with caring neighbors around the region, state, and country have come together, hand in hand, to rebuild. Together, we will build back better and thrive.

A huge thank you to our local partners, dedicated volunteers, zoos, and nature centers across the country who stepped up to support our animals and staff during this challenging time. Your generosity and teamwork remind us that resilience is stronger when we come together.

Come visit us and celebrate this fresh start! Our animals—and our team—can’t wait to welcome you back.
