What’s Up AVL! This week City of Asheville talks emergency preparedness and Helene response

Posted on September 2, 2025September 30, 2025 by Sam Parada
Sam Parada interviews Jeremy Knighton on the set of What's Up AVL

The City of Asheville’s bi-monthly radio show allows the community to take a deep dive with the City of Asheville staff and departments.

You can learn about different departments and what projects are taking place in your community.

On this week’s episode, Jeremy Knighton, Assistant Fire Chief, joins host Sam Parada to talk about emergency preparedness, as well as emergency response during Helene last year.

It is that time of the year when being prepared for an emergency is very important! With hurricane season coming up, do you have the necessary items stored away to be self-reliant for up to 72 hours during an emergency? If not, or if you don’t know, check out this handy video that gives examples of useful items to store in an emergency kit for any such case.

Hear from Jeremy Knight himself about what went on behind the scenes during the storm as staff worked hard to save lives and recover after Helene hit.
