Ways Asheville can celebrate Earth Day all this month

Here are some ways our Asheville community can celebrate Earth Month locally — leading up to Earth Day on April 22!


Participate in Food Waste Reduction Month — Asheville City Council proclaimed April as Food Waste Reduction Month. More than 57,000 tons of food waste is generated in Buncombe County each year. How can you make a difference? Compost, meal plan, conduct a food waste audit — find more ideas here.


A month of events:

  • Anytime: #AVLFoodWasteChallenge — Ongoing throughout the month. Find details here.
    HERE is the home food waste audit worksheet, you can use this to track your food waste at home for the week, or the whole month!  Take a photo and post it with the hashtag above to enter.  Other quick and easy ways to enter include snapping a photo of your home food waste hack, your compost pile, or anytime you see food waste in action at home or in the community.  Each photo posted with the hashtag #AVLFoodWasteChallenge enters you to win a great prize, you can enter as many times as you want!
  • April 7, 6 p.m. — Join the virtual Asheville-Buncombe Solarize kick-off event. This is the official announcement of the Solarize campaign with an appearance from Buncombe County Commission Chairman Newman. Live question and answer session will be hosted.   • April 20, noon to 1 p.m. and April 23,  6 to 7 p.m. — FREE composting workshops. Participants will get free materials to start composting at home! For more information and to register visit Asheville Greenworks website.
  • Keep an eye on the events calendar HERE for more information on ways to plug in to Food Waste Reduction activities and events.
  • Anytime: sign up for a free home energy chat with the Blue Horizons Project to explore ways to save energy in your home.
  • Anytime: Play Earth Month BINGO! The virtual BINGO card will feature opportunities to engage with community partners through workshops, activities, service and more.
    Lend a hand cleaning up our rivers, restoring native plant and animal habitats, or clearing invasive plants. Or, learn how to compost, explore nearby hiking trails, or create art and poetry.
