Volunteers needed for Asheville pedestrian and bicycle count

Did you know that 1,400 people were counted passing by the corner of Haywood Street and College Street in a 2-hour period?

Pedestrian and bicycle counts are important opportunities to help identify the highest use and rate of growth of walking and bicycling. Volunteers are needed for a 3-hour time commitment during this year’s count, scheduled to be held September 13-17. Please contact Asheville Transportation Planner Barb Mee at bmee@ashevillenc.gov with questions. Or you can sign up for one or more shifts by going to AshevilleNC.gov/BikePedRegistration.

The data gathered by volunteers during the pedestrian and bicycle count will help to:

  • determine the need for pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and amenities throughout town,
  • create a reliable data set, and
  • assess the impact of development on pedestrian and bicycle routes.

Results of the count are expected to be shared with the community this winter.
