From Friday evening, September 25, through Saturday morning, September 26, 13 recruits of the Asheville Fire Department’s 102nd Academy underwent their final integration evaluation at the Buncombe County Fire Training Facility.
This progressive, scenario-driven event tests the practical application of skills taught throughout the Academy. Working in assigned companies under simulated dispatch conditions, recruits respond to diverse incidents including fires, EMS calls, technical rescues, land searches, public assists, and a mass-casualty scenario. Alongside technical execution, the evaluation monitors how well recruits manage fatigue, competing priorities, unit accountability, public relations, and incident transitions.
Divided into two operational periods with a one-hour break between them, the exercise prioritizes safe execution, purposeful evaluation, and realistic company workloads over strict adherence to schedule timelines.
This final assessment allows the Asheville Fire Department to determine that all who pass are ready to serve the community, from their first day on the job, with the same level of excellent service as existing AFD staff – no matter the call.
