Text 911 launches in Asheville

Beginning July 1, the Asheville Police Department has the capability to accept text messages to 9-1-1. This allows individuals who are unable to dial 9-1-1 to make contact with emergency services.

Once a person has contacted 9-1-1 via text message — and requested whatever assistance is needed — there will be a series of texts back and forth between the telecommunicator and individual requiring service.

A text message will NOT provide the exact location of the person requesting service, so this is information that will need to be provided in the text message exchange.

Please note that texting 9-1-1 is not a substitute for calling the emergency number. Also we ask that if you are operating a motor vehicle and have an emergency to please call 9-1-1 or pull over to safely use the text feature.
