New traffic light coming to Montford Avenue

A traffic light will be placed at the intersection of Montford Avenue and Cullowhee and Soco streets in June. Upgrades to sidewalks at the intersection will also be made as part of the project.

This has been in the works for five years and was requested by the neighborhood to help with safety issues related to the intersection near the convenience store on Montford Avenue.

Starting June 1, a contractor will begin the work, starting on the west side of Montford Avenue.

The project includes the addition of new brick sidewalks and rehabilitation of existing brick sidewalks on the east side of Montford in the vicinity of the grocery store and on the peninsula between Soco and Cullowhee.  A new concrete sidewalk will be poured on the northwest side of the Cullowhee-Montford intersection.  Concrete pads will be poured for future bus shelters on the east and west sides of Montford.  New crosswalks will be marked on Montford, Soco and both sections of Cullowhee. A large tree beside the grocery store that is the cause of much of the brick sidewalk rehabilitation will be removed and replaced with a smaller species of tree more appropriate for the site.

Completion of the project is estimated to take about 30 days.

This project has been approved by the Historic Resources Commission.
