The 2025 Bicycle & Pedestrian Count and Greenway User Survey reports are now available! The Bicycle & Pedestrian Counts and Greenway User Surveys take place each year during the second week of September.
What is the Bicycle & Pedestrian Count Report?
Volunteers assist in collecting data on the number of bicyclists and pedestrians entering pre-determined intersections. The report details findings on helmet usage, gender breakdown among bicyclists and pedestrians, and how numbers of bicyclists and pedestrians counted change from year to year.
Bicycle & Pedestrian Count Report
Here are some key highlights from the 2025 report:
- 36 volunteers counted across 24 sites.
- The overall Bike Count Data collected shows that seven count shifts recorded peak counts in 2025. The overall Pedestrian Count Data collected shows that nine count shifts recorded peak counts in 2025.
- At least 20 percent of all bikes counted were e-bikes.
What is the Greenway User Survey Report?
Volunteers interact with greenway users on the Wilma Dykeman Greenway and Reed Creek Greenway and survey them to understand their usage patterns, motivations for using the path, demographics, and desired improvements.
Key points from the 2025 report include:
- 331 surveys were completed, surveying 518 people (one survey was completed per group).
- 30% of people got to the Wilma Dykeman Greenway by walking, running or bicycling while 63% used those modes of transportation to get to the Reed Creek Greenway.
- Walking was the primary mode of transportation for users on both greenways.
- 42% surveyed use the Wilma Dykeman Greenway a few times per week, and 26% use it every day. 39% surveyed use the Reed Creek Greenway a few times per week and 28% use it every day.
- In 2025, people were more likely to spend money while on the Reed Creek Greenway. For those who made purchases, the average amount of money spent while on a greenway was $60.
- Findings reflect that females may feel safer riding on separated bicycle facilities (like greenways) in Asheville over riding in mixed traffic.
- The top desired improvement on both greenways were for more restrooms and water.
Thank you to all community members who volunteered to help with the Bike/Ped Count and Greenway User Surveys this year!
