Input wanted on River Arts District form-based code draft document

Posted on October 12, 2015September 26, 2019 by Web Editors - CAPE

We want your input!
The City of Asheville has embarked on a form-based code process for the River Arts District. We’ve seen the benefits of a form-based code in downtown, where it has added to the predictability of development for the community and developers, ensured that new buildings are compatible with surrounding areas, and has made the development process easier.

A charrette (a week of workshops/meetings) was held the week of July 25 -30 to get input and feedback from the community on what the form-based code might look like. For six days, our consultants led the public and stakeholders in discussions and exercises to get a sense of what the community, business owners and property owners wanted.

The consultants at Code Studio put together a Charrette Report summarizing the week, and City staff needs your input on the document.  It is important to remember that these are draft recommendations for future zoning districts, but do not represent decisions that have been made. The draft recommendations in this report are NOT the final zoning recommendations that will be going to City Council.

What we need:  We need your input. As you read this document here are some questions that you can ask and respond to – but of course you are not limited to these. We want to hear your thoughts!

  • Are proposed height limits appropriate?
  • Are land uses that are listed in each district the right ones? Should more be added? Or eliminated?
  • Are there any other items that need to be considered for the district?

How to view the document:

  • The Charrette Report can be found online at Code Studio.
  • A paper copy of the report is available at the front desk of City Hall, 5th You are welcome to come and spend some time looking at it during City Hall hours.

How to give us your feedback:

  • Comment right in the document from your internet browser. We have put the document into Open Comment, where you can comment on each line right in the document.
  • The   allows you to comment on the post about the charrette report as well.
  • The Project Facebook page allows comments, or direct messages that will go to the consultants and staff.
  • Written comments may be submitted in person at City Hall, 5th floor or you can send an email to Sasha Vrtunski, Project Manager at svrtunski@ashevillenc.gov.
