In a swift response to incident near Crump Shiloh Community Center, Asheville Parks & Recreation reaffirms commitment to community safety

As stated in the press release from Asheville Police Department (APD), a shooting took place on July 21 near Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center which resulted in injuries to individuals not associated with summer camp or organized center programming. Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) would like to assure the public that no campers or camp staff were harmed in the incident and at no time were children in direct danger.

APR staff acted swiftly and appropriately by following established safety protocols, ensuring the protection of all participants. Campers were kept safely inside the Crump Shiloh Center building while authorities responded to the scene. The safety and well-being of campers and community center users remains the absolute highest priority.

APR is working in close cooperation with the Asheville Police Department (APD) as they investigate this situation. The department is taking every measure to ensure the continued safety of campers, team members, and neighbors.

Out of an abundance of caution, Crump Shiloh Center will operate on a modified schedule from 8:30 am to 6 pm for summer camp activities only July 22-25. During this period, the center will be closed to the general public and all other programming will be cancelled. Summer camp will proceed as scheduled for registered campers. There will also be an increased police presence in the area for the immediate future to support the safety and well-being of all park visitors.

APR is further exploring counseling services for campers and team members who may need support. More details will be shared about these services as soon as they are finalized.
