Homestays: Overflow crowd speaks to Asheville City Council

Posted on August 26, 2015October 23, 2019 by Polly McDaniel

Thank you to everyone who came out to the City Council meeting Tuesday. Staff had to open two overflow rooms to accommodate all the people who came down to City Hall to voice their input about proposed amendments to homestay regulations and fine increases for illegal short-term vacation rentals.

Some 62 people signed up for the public hearing on the proposed homestay amendments.

After the public hearing on homestays, Council elected to defer the vote, noting the complexity and far-reaching consequences of the issue. Here are comments Mayor Esther Manheimer made during council discussion.

Following the vote to defer the homestay decision, Council voted to increase fines for illegal short-term vacation rentals from $100 to $500 per day.
