As summer moves into its final month, Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) invites the community to soak up every moment with a can’t-miss lineup of events this August. From creative activities for kids and teens and a movie under the stars to enriching workshops and outdoor adventures, there is something for everyone. Teen Color Party at Tempie Avery Montford Center
August 2, 1-2:30pm
Wear your cleanest white and leave looking like a human masterpiece at the ultimate color-drenched good time for community members ages 12-17. Entry is $5. The center also hosts Magnificent Messes on August 17 and August 31 for toddlers to bring out chaotic creations.

Back to School Bash at Linwood Crump Shiloh Center
August 8, 1-5pm
Celebrate the end of summer with style and flair including high-energy games, music, and free school supplies while they last.

Movies in the Park at Pack Square Park
August 14, movie begins around 8:30pm
Lightning McQueen falls out of his trailer and winds up in a run-down town called Radiator Springs full of odd residents in the Pixar classic Cars. The APR Rec ‘n’ Roll Play Zone opens about an hour before showtime with games, music, and activities for kids and teens.

Casino Night at Grove Street Center
August 15, 5-10pm
Roll the dice and double down for a night of high-stakes fun with classic table games, friendly dealers, and incredible prizes that rival Vegas, but no real money changes hands at this event for adults ages 21+.

Hand Building Clay for Adults at Harvest House
August 18-September 8, Tuesday afternoons from 1-4pm
Learn timeless techniques to create keepsakes and functional decor in a relaxed environment as you watch your ideas take shape. Registration is $75 for the four-week course for adults ages 18+.

Edible Park Workday at Stephens-Lee Center
August 21, 9-11:30am
Bring your work gloves and water bottle to Dr. George Washington Carver Edible Park to grow community and harvest a bounty of fresh fruits and nuts from more than 40 different species of trees. At the end of the session, Bountiful Cities hosts an interactive gardening lesson.

River Snorkeling with APR Outdoors
Ages 18+ sessions on August 21 and August 25, 9am-3pm
Family session on August 29, 9am-2:30pm
View vibrant ecosystems just below the surface of clean mountain streams and learn to understand your observations and the science behind them. Wetsuits, snorkel masks, and transportation from Murphy-Oakley Center provided. Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for kids.

Final Water Aerobics Class of the Summer at Wesley Grant Southside Center
August 29, 10-11am
Experience the benefits of water resistance every Saturday morning with easy-to-follow movements in a supportive environment that fosters connections for adults 18+. The pool closes for the year on September 7.
