Vermont Avenue in West Asheville

The City of Asheville is asking for public input on sidewalk improvements along Vermont Avenue in West Asheville. The project will address approximately 1,200 lineal feet of existing severely damaged sidewalk and replace it with new  Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant concrete sidewalk along Vermont Avenue between Haywood Road to just south of Olney Road.

In addition to sidewalk replacement, the project will include associated curb rehabilitation and driveway apron reconstruction, as well as the addition of ADA ramps and crosswalks.  The community can select from three options.

Option 1

Option 2

Option 3

Replace existing sidewalk on both sides with 6-foot-wide sidewalk, remove trees, add curb extensions with tree plantings, add traffic calming, plant trees in yards to help replace lost tree canopy

Replace existing sidewalk on east side only (remove trees and +/- 2-foot grass buffer strip on east side), save healthy trees on west side, add trees on west side to replace lost canopy.

Replace existing sidewalk on both sides with 4’ wide sidewalk, keeping a +/- 2-foot grass strip between the existing curb and new sidewalk.  Preserve existing street trees where possible, and replant new trees in grass buffer strip.
