The City of Asheville Street Department will be starting a tree and sidewalk improvement project on Monday March 27th, along Charlotte St. near the Biltmore Ave. intersection.

Workers will be upgrading sidewalks to meet ADA compliance. During this process, 5 sweetgum trees, a non-native species for the elevation of Asheville, will be replaced with 5 trees, like white oak or tulip poplar,  which have deeper root systems, causing less damage to the sidewalks. This work will require daily lane closures and the sidewalk in the area of work will remain closed until works are completed.  (see photo). Staff will place a  “Sidewalk Closed: Cross Here” sign at the corner of Beaumont Street and Charlotte Street.

The project is expected to take about 3 weeks. Pedestrians will find a temporary crosswalk: “Sidewalk Closed Cross Here” sign at the corner of Beaumont Street and Charlotte Street. Businesses will remain accessible throughout the project
