With spring in the air and the boys of summer ready to hit the new and improved home field, City of Asheville staff click off the final check list of the McCormick Field Centennial Restoration and Capital Improvements project.

In partnership with the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, Buncombe County Government and the Asheville Tourists Baseball Club, the City of Asheville spearheaded the significant renovation project of the ballpark.

The restoration project not only brings the facility up to current Major League Baseball Player Development League (minor leagues) Standards but the improvements allow the facility to host non-baseball events throughout the year.

As the team prepares for tomorrow’s home opener, we got a sneak peek at the renovation improvements which include:

  • Expansion of the existing ticketing building for new ticketing team store facilities
  • Home team clubhouse improvements, including new female locker rooms and upgraded weight spaces, restrooms, kitchen and dining areas
  • New video board and streaming capable control system.
  • 93 new LED sports lights fixtures
  • Accessible ramp, expanded concourse new group services areas.

The project to bring Hometrust Park up to snuff and provide the community additional benefits took team work off the field as well.  A variety of vendors, contractors, works and services had to be coordinated by the project manager to make this a winning facility. Because baseball fans like stats, here are a couple that reflect the coordination and team work throughout the project.

  • 180,488  total hours worked
  • 615 different workers throughout construction
  • 62 different subcontractors
  • 850 porta potties emptied – ’cause there’s no crying in baseball!
  • 13 – the number of black bears seen on site during construction. Even our local bears can’t pass up a sneak peek

So take your friends and family out to the ballgame. Be part of the crowd welcoming the 2026 season and appreciating the work carried out by City of Asheville staff and our partners. Tickets for tomorrow’s season opener are sold out, but tickets are still available for the other home games this week and for future games on the TouristsTickets.com website.
